I was delighted to have my work selected again for this prestigious Exhibition held annually at the Mall Galleries in London this summer. My PopArt work is female centric, so to be chosen by the wonderful SWA was a double blessing for me.
Unfortunately the Private View was held on one of the hottest days of the year, and coming up from Bristol for the day, I had to bow to the news from GWR trains that railway lines were buckling in the heat and we were advised not to make any train journeys that day. I was gutted to miss the PV as I remembered what huge fun last year’s PV was. I had met so many amazing people there, networked, saw fabulous art by such talented female artists and of course enjoyed a glass of fizz. Sadly not to be this year, but maybe next year.
With my art I am drawn to sparseness and isolation, but also to bright and vivid colours, after my years in sunny South Africa ; I think the two themes can live in tension alongside each other. I usually paint women with no facial details, or in shadow/backview as I want the viewer to be drawn into the whole picture, not just the face. This particular piece shows a couple in isolation; either as strangers sitting in companionable silence, or as a couple together, but alone. The viewer can decide.
